The cultural history of the city through soundscapes: Issues on research and methodology

What did the religious buildings of Thessaloniki sound like during the transition of the city’s characteristics from Ottoman to Greek? What kind of sonic communities were brought together in the soundscapes of those buildings? What does the sound research reveal to the cultural historian? And, what is more, how do we listen to a text, a picture or a building?

This lecture aims to give answers to the questions above, on the basis of a research project entitled “Learning Culture Through City Soundscapes- Teacher Handbook ”. Focusing on the sound history of the Old Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki- Geni Tzami, it suggests a critical approach to theoretical and methodological aspects of cultural and sensory history.
